
Aguilar, Janzer Claim Individual Patriots Open Titles

Six place during weekend action at George Mason University
FAIRFAX, Va. – Wrestling unattached, freshmen Nicolas Aguilar (125) and Billy Janzer (184) claimed individual titles on Sunday at the George Mason Patriots Open in Fairfax, Virginia. In total, six members of the Rutgers wrestling team placed at the all-day tournament.
Freshman Malcolm Robinson (133, unattached) finished second in his weight class, while Jake Benner (149, 6th), John Ciaramella (174, unattached, 7th) and Luke Ecklof (133, 8th) also found their way onto the podium.
Aguilar went 4-0 with three decisions and a tech fall during his run to the 125-pound title. In his championship match against 2018 NCAA qualifier Gage Curry (American), Aguilar recorded an escape in the third period to make it 1-1 and force sudden victory. After a scoreless first overtime period, Aguilar added another escape in TB1 for a 2-1 lead. Aguilar then rode out Curry for the duration of TB2 for the victory.
Janzer also went 4-0 on Sunday with two decisions, a medical forfeit and a fall. In his title bout with Tanner Harvey (American), Janzer landed a takedown in the opening period for an early 2-0 lead. Janzer then added another takedown and two escapes in the second period, which was the difference in his 6-4 victory to secure the 184-pound title.
Robinson collected three wins, including a major decision and two decisions, en route to a spot in the 133-pound title match against two-time NCAA qualifier Josh Terao (American). Robinson earned six back points on a reversal and four-point near fall, but Terao secured the fall in the second period for the win.
Benner collected four wins en route to his sixth-place finish wrestling attached, while Eckloff added two victories at 133 pounds wrestling attached.
