MELBOURN, FL – Women's golf is 12th with a 614 (314-300) total after the initial two rounds of the Moon Invitational, played Monday in a steady breeze with wind gusts up to 22 miles-per-hour at Duran Golf Club. In their initial event of the spring, the Scarlet Knights improved 14 strokes in the second round against a competitive field comprised of multiple ranked programs.
"I am pleased with our scoring in the afternoon after a slow start in the morning," said Rutgers head coach Kari Williams. "We look to build off our good play tomorrow to move up the leaderboard."
Senior captain Emily Mills, playing in first position, paced RU and enters Tuesday's final round tied for 21st with a 149 (75-74) on the par 72, 6,309-yard course. She has 22 pars and five birdies.
"I was able to roll in a few putts early in the round and carried that momentum throughout the day," said Mills. "We saw that it is a 'scoreable' course and I'm excited to see what we can do tomorrow."
All five competitors registered stronger scores on their second 18. Freshmen Lori Char and Harriett Allsebrook carded 73 and 75, respectively. Allsebrook is tied for 44th with a 153 (78-75) and Char is tied for 51st with a 154 (81-73) in the 74-player field. Allsebrook is minus three on par five holes, while Char has 24 pars.
Senior Tatum Jackson and redshirt junior Ashleigh Greenham rounded-out the team scorecard. Jackson is tied for 63rd with a 158 (80-78) and Greenham is 74th with a 166 (85-81).
"We fought the wind most of the day, but the course still provided great opportunities for scoring," said Williams. "Emily put together two solid rounds to lead us. Harriet and Lori bounced back after their first rounds and played really well this afternoon, and Tatum also had some good stretches of golf."
No. 8-ranked Furman is in first place with a 575 (283-292), five strokes ahead of second place Augusta at the Invitational, hosted by No. 23-ranked Louisville. The Scarlet Knights enter the final round four strokes behind 11th place Michigan, five strokes behind 10th place Southern Miss and five strokes ahead of USF.
Madison Thomas of Memphis is atop the individual leaderboard after carding a four-under par 140 (69-71). Four competitors are tied for second with 141 totals.
Tee times begin at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday. The Scarlet Knights are paired with Michigan and Southern Miss for the third and final round. Results will be posted on Golfstat.com and available here at the conclusion of competition.
