Senior Reflections: Makenzey Shank
Mar 23 | Women's Gymnastics
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers gymnastics competes at the Big Ten Championships Saturday at 3 p.m. on Big Ten Network. It will be the final team meet for the three seniors, including Makenzey Shank.
From Phoenix, Arizona, Shank has consistently been one of the top scorers for RU on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise with a combined 34 career routines reaching 9.800 or better. The highlight came on Feb. 24 when she tied the school record with a 9.925 on balance beam. The mark had not been achieved by a Scarlet Knight since 2004 and led to Shank becoming the first Big Ten weekly winner since the program joined the conference.
In the classroom, Shank is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. She will graduate in May as a journalism and media studies major.
"Micki has done a lot of great gymnastics here," head coach Louis Levine said. "She works every day to get better. When you continue to make improvements even as you come to the end of your career, that says a lot about the type of person she is."
Here is Shank in her own words on her career…
On being at Rutgers: "It is different a different vibe here, but I definitely do not regret my decision at all. I'm really happy that I got to go across the country and experience something completely different, from the people all the way down to the weather. It has been a great experience."
On being part of the team: "I've definitely learned patience and how to control what I can control. Also, I've learned to support other people and be there for others, especially my teammates and other people in the athletic community. It has been really nice."
On highlights: "Of course there are some gymnastics highlights, but our trips during the season have been great. One of our favorites last season was when we went to the Bean in Chicago. I had never seen that and we were all taking pictures with our reflections. That's something I'm going to look back on and smile."
On the future: "I've been interning for a magazine in New York City and I love it. I love write, pitching and all that surrounds that. Hopefully I can move more towards that area and continue. The dream is to write for Cosmopolitan. I'm into makeup and beauty. I'll work my way up there.
