Scarlet Knights pick up first win under new head coach Justin Price
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers women's rowing opened the 2018 season with a win on the team's home course, sweeping Columbia on Saturday, March 24 on the Raritan River.
"Today was a good day for the Scarlet Knights," said head coach Justin Price. "It was a lot of fun to see the athletes on the race course for the first time this season. Everyone in the program did a nice job today. We will be able to achieve some great things if we continue to work hard to improve."
Rutgers notched head-to-head wins in the second varsity eight and varsity eight to end the day. In the second varsity eight, the Scarlet Knights outpaced the Lions by eight seconds for the victory (6:34.2-6:42.5). Rutgers was six seconds faster that Columbia in the varsity eight race, clocking at 6:23.5 ahead of the Lions in 6:29.4.
In the varsity four, RU raced two boats against Columbia. Rutgers' first varsity four finished with a winning time of 7:19.3, while Columbia placed second in 7:21.2, followed by the second varsity four in 7:34.4.
The day opened with the Scarlet Knights racing a pair of novice eight boats against the third varsity eight for Columbia. RU's novice eight finished first in 6:52.2, followed by the third varsity eight for the Lions in 7:12.7 and the Scarlet Knights' second novice eight in 7:25.5.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, March 31 for the Doc Hosea Invitational in Cherry Hill, N.J.
