Lee and Muzik Earn Singles Victories on Senior Day against Indiana
Apr 22 | Women's Tennis
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers tennis hosted Senior Day on Sunday afternoon before its season finale match against Indiana at the Rutgers Tennis Complex. The Scarlet Knights honored its 2018 seniors – Mingxiu Du, Chloe Lee, and Lee Levy – in a ceremony before the match.
"The team showed a lot of resiliency this season despite some of our losses," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We had some really close doubles points we weren't able to capitalize on, but they always came back to practice every day really willing to work."
"We lose three great seniors [moving into next year], but what we really need to get better at is capitalizing when we are up and not letting our opponents back in the door. Today Chloe had a great match where she closed it out in the second set and Kat was able to win in three sets. I'm pleased with our effort today and we look forward to still building for next year."
Despite singles victories for Lee and sophomore Kat Muzik, Rutgers fell to Indiana, 5-2, in a tightly contested match. IU edged out the doubles point and the remaining four singles matches for the win.
After IU gained an advantage with a victory at the No. 3 spot in doubles, the pair of Du and Muzik were edged 7-6 (3-0) by the Hoosiers' Xiwei Cai and Natalie Whalen at the No. 1 spot.
At the No. 2 spot in singles, Lee cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Indiana's Whalen to close out her career "On the Banks" with a win.
"It felt amazing to win on senior day," said Lee. "I couldn't have asked for a better experience as a student-athlete at Rutgers. Coach Hilary and Catarina are such dedicated coaches and the team works so hard. I'm so happy to be able to put a cap on my career in the best way."
Meanwhile, at the No. 3 spot, Muzik battled for a 6-2,2-6, 6-2 win over Caitlin Bernard.
"Our team really takes student-athlete into account. They work hard in the classroom, they work hard on the tennis court and I think the seniors have been great role models to the team in regards to that. I want to thank them for all they have done and I wish them the the best in their future," said Ritchie.
