Rutgers to Host Metro Rival St. John’s in Gavitt Tipoff Games
May 15 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers will host metro rival St. John's on Friday, Nov. 16, in the annual Gavitt Tipoff Games to supplement an exciting 2018-19 home schedule that features 10 Big Ten Conference contests, including match-ups with national finalist Michigan, NCAA participants Michigan State and Ohio State, as well as NIT champion Penn State.
"We are thrilled to once again participate in the Gavitt Tipoff," said Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell. "Given our history as a former Big East member, the Gavitt Games give us the unique opportunity to not only play a quality opponent early in the season, but to also compete against former conference rivals. St. John's will be a terrific challenge for us, as they are well-coached with a very talented roster. We look forward to meeting the challenge with the support of our fans here at The RAC."
The schools have met 41 times during the regular and post-seasons dating back to 1974, with the Red Storm holding a 27-14 advantage in victories. In the last official match-up, the Scarlet Knights dropped a 61-59 decision to St. John's at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 19, 2015, in the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games. This past season, RU defeated SJU 80-78 in a charity exhibition at the RAC with all net proceeds donated to American Red Cross Disaster Relief.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the Big East and basketball visionary. Scheduled through 2022, the event will be played on consecutive days in the first full week of the college basketball season.
The Scarlet Knights are 1-1 in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. In Pikiell's first road game at the helm, he directed Rutgers to a 66-59 win over DePaul at Allstate Arena on Nov. 17, 2016, in the team's last event appearance.
