PISCATAWAY, N.J. –
Simrin Dhillon (field hockey) and
Sebastian Joseph (football) from Rutgers were both honored by the Big Ten on Thursday as winners of the Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. The two are in a select group of 28 student-athletes from across the conference that were chosen from a list of more than 350 recognized for positive sportsmanship throughout the academic year.
Â
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution. All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Â
Dhillon played in 47 games in her Scarlet Knights career, starting 11 between back and midfield and recording one assist and one defensive save. A team captain in 2017, she also served as the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The native of Vancouver, British Columbia, was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Â
"She consistently conducts herself with character and integrity, both on and off the field," head coach
Meredith Civico said. "She puts her team and her university first and serves as a tremendous example to the field hockey team as well as the entire Rutgers Athletics community."
Â
Joseph, who was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, started all 12 games at nose tackle last season and finished his career playing in 49 consecutive games and 50 overall. The defensive lineman totaled 41 tackles as a senior, with a career-high seven in the win over Maryland, and earned a share of the Homer Hazel Award for the team's MVP. The Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, native also had 4.5 tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass batted down, one forced fumble, one blocked field goal, was a candidate for the AFCA Good Works Team and garnered honorable mention All-Big Ten in 2018. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Joseph earned his undergraduate degree as a journalism and media studies major.
Â
"Sebastian showed up every day with a great attitude and a smile on his face," head coach
Chris Ash said. "He made others around him better through his work ethic and determination, which made him a great leader for us."
