Nicholls (Team USA) and Cogdell (Team England)
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Two Rutgers field hockey student-athletes are playing with their respective countries U-21 squads. Emily Nicholls (USA) and Anna Cogdell (England) are in competition this week with their nation's U-21 squad.
The tournament takes place July 8 to 15 at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Lilleshall, England, featuring teams from Belgium and India in addition to England and the United States.
This is the second selection to play with their countries' U-21 team this year. Nicholls was previously selected for the Junior Pan American Championship in Chile, while Cogdell recently competed in a 3-test series against Scotland.
Nicholls completed an excellent redshirt freshman campaign 'On the Banks' this past season. The goalkeeper from Haddon Heights, N.J. was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team after posting a 1.61 goals-against-average and 78.8% save percentage with 108 saves.
The Camden Catholic product was second in Big Ten in 6.0 saves per game and third in Big Ten (sixth nationally) in save percentage and had the most saves in a season for any RU goalkeeper under head coach Meredith Civico. That marked the most stops for a RU goalkeeper since Rosalyn Wentko had 127 in the 2006 season.
A native of Badingham, England, Cogdell has excelled in two years 'On the Banks'. A starter from the moment she arrived on campus in all 35 games, she had scored three goals with six assists for 12 collegiate points through her sophomore season.
Cogdell was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2024. She was a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch and NFHCA Collegiate Watch List pick heading into last season. Academically, she has been named Academic All-Big Ten and twice on the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Team USA opened play on Wednesday against India. The Red, White and Blue are slated for matchups against India Saturday, Belgium on Sunday, and England on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.
England had a friendly matchup Thursday against India. They face Belgium on Saturday, India on Sunday and then the two matchups against USA.
