Cappie Pondexter Signs with Indiana Fever

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Rutgers Athletics Hall of Famer Cappie Pondexter was waived by the Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday, and then signed with the Indiana Fever on Sunday.
Pondexter, who ranks fourth on the WNBA all-time scoring list with 6,591 points and sixth on the WNBA all-time assists list with 1,534, signed a free agent contract with the Fever. Now in her 13th year in the league, this will be Pondexter's fifth WNBA team. She is one of seven Scarlet Knights currently playing in the WNBA and one of 20 former RU women's basketball players to be drafted by the league.
Pondexter's next game with the Fever on July 3rdat the Minnesota Lynx will be the 400thof her 13-year career. She is reunited with Fever Head Coach Pokey Chatman, who was her coach when she was with the Chicago Sky, and joins former Scarlet Knight Erica Wheeler on the roster.
The Phoenix Mercury drafted Pondexter with the second overall pick in 2006 where she won two WNBA Championships (Phoenix Mercury '07 and '09) and was chosen as the WNBA Finals MVP (Phoenix Mercury '07). Pondexter has also made stops with the New York Liberty, Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks.
During her career at Rutgers, Pondexter was the unanimous selection as 2006 BIG EAST Player of the Year and the first player in BIG EAST history to earn first team honors four-straight years. She scored 2,211 points during her illustrious career, ranking second all-time. The Associated Press and Kodak/WBCA All-American concluded her collegiate career ranked in the top-10 in 12 categories in the RU record book. She was also the first player in Rutgers history to post 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists in her career.
Pondexter was also named to the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2016.
