Sep 11 | Women's Golf
WOODBURY, Minn. - Rutgers women's golf placed 12th with a 900 (297-300-303) total at the Golden Gopher Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at Prestwick Golf Club. Freshman Maeve Rossi, playing in her initial collegiate event, carded a 221 (74-75-72), to finish tied for 22nd in the highly-competitive, 84-player field.
Rossi's even par 72 in Tuesday's final round tied for the seventh-best performance of the day. Overall, she was minus one on par fives with 35 pars and eight birdies on the 6,479-yard course. The rookie competed in first position for the Scarlet Knights.
"My play off the tee was much better today, which put me in good positions to hit into greens," said Rossi. "There were several pins I was able to attack and I gave myself some closer looks at birdie. Overall, I was excited to compete with my teammates this week and am looking forward to our next event."
Junior Carrie-Ann Lee and graduate student Ashleigh Greenham joined Rossi among the top 55 in RU's first event of the 2018-19 season. Lee tied for 42nd with a 225 (75-73-77) and Greenham tied for 55th with a 228 (73-76-79). Lee was minus two on par fives with seven birdies, while Greenham was plus one on par threes, tying for the seventh-best performance in the field on short-yardage holes.
Senior Astrid Aneman (79-78-75) and junior Ana Cortes (75-76-81) rounded-out the team scorecard with 232 totals to tie for 67th.
Collectively, the Scarlet Knights registered 165 pars and 27 birdies. RU was plus-15 on par three holes, the ninth best showing in the 15-team field.
San Jose State won the team title by 12 strokes over second place Virginia Tech with an 860 (282-287-291). SJSU's Natasha Andrea Oon earned medalist honors in convincing fashion, carding a nine-under 207 (67-70-70).
The Scarlet Knights finished a stroke out of 11th place and bested San Francisco, host and Big Ten rival Minnesota, and South Dakota State.
Rutgers, under the leadership of head coach Kari Williams, returns to the links Sept. 15-16 at the 35th annual Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing.
