Rutgers Set to Compete Against Seven NCAA Squads at Mary Fossum Invite
Sep 14 | Women's Golf
PISCATAWAY – Women's golf travels to East Lansing to compete in the 35th annual Mary Fossum Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16, at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The 16-team tournament features four programs listed in the Golfweek preseason top 30 and seven teams that earned berths to the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
"We will face a very competitive field this weekend in East Lansing and our team is excited for the challenge," said head coach Kari Williams. "Earlier in the week at Minnesota, we had some good stretches of golf. We just needed to be a little sharper with our play in the closing holes of our rounds. Our goal this week is to mind the details out on the course and to play better every round."
The Scarlet Knights, No. 12 Florida, host and No. 18 Michigan State, No. 23 Virginia, No. 26 Miami, Eastern Michigan, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas State, Mercer, Mississippi State, Northern Illinois, Old Dominion, Sacramento State, Texas Tech, and Toledo comprise the field. The Spartans will be looking to retain their tournament title, which was won by the Hurricanes in 2016.
Freshman Maeve Rossi, junior Carrie-Ann Lee, graduate co-captain Ashleigh Greenham, junior co-captain Ana Cortes and sophomore Harriet Allsebrook will compete for Rutgers in the second tournament of its five fall tournaments.
Rossi will play in first position for the second consecutive event. Competing in her collegiate opener, she carded a 221 (74-75-72), to finish tied for 22nd at the Minnesota Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at Prestwick Golf Club. Her even par 72 in the final round tied for the seventh-best performance of the day. Overall, she was minus one on par fives with 35 pars and eight birdies.
Lee and Greenham joined Rossi among the top 55 in the highly-competitive, 84-player field. The Scarlet Knights placed 12th with a 900 (297-300-303) total.
Forest Akers West is a par 72, 6,334-yard course located on the campus of Michigan State. Extensively redesigned by Arthur Hills in 1992, it is recognized as one of the best public golf courses in the state.
Thirty-six holes are scheduled for day one, with an additional 18 slated for Sunday. Play will begin via an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday and a 9 a.m. shotgun start on day two. Live results will be available via Golfstat.
