UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Women's golf placed third with a program-record, 54-hole, 879 (299-288-292) total at the 16-team Nittany Lion Invitational, played Saturday and Sunday on the Penn State Blue Course. Freshman Maeve Rossi was runner-up in the 90-player field with a three-under par 213 (71-70-72), the second-best, three-round individual effort in school history.
"We have a lot of positives to take away from the weekend," said head coach Kari Williams. "We put together three of our strongest rounds of the fall and really made some strides in our execution out on the course. It was exciting to have our team in this position heading into the final 18. I know we can continue to improve our scoring over the closing holes."
The Scarlet Knights' record-setting score bested the prior record of 886, set under Williams at the 2016 Big Ten Championship, by seven strokes.
Playing in first position for the third time in as many events, Rossi was a tournament-best three-under on par three holes, three under on par fives, with 38 pars and 10 birdies. Her total was one stroke shy of the program-best 212 produced by Emily Mills at the River Landing Classic this past March.
Sophomore Harriet Allsebrook and junior Carrie-Ann Lee also produced top 20 finishes for the Scarlet Knights. Allsebrook tied for seventh with a 218 (73-72-73), while Lee tied for 17th with a 222 (79-72-71). Allsebrook was minus one on par four holes, the third best tournament performance in the category, and had 41 pars, the third highest output among competitors. Lee ascended the leaderboard throughout the tournament.
Graduate co-captain Ashleigh Greenham registered RU's final counting score on day two to tie for 37th with a 228 (78-74-76) on the par 72, 6,322-yard course.
Senior Astrid Aneman tied for 75th with a 242 (77-81-84). Competing individually, sophomore Lori Char tied for 79th with a 243 (80-84-79).
Host Penn State and Washington shared the team title with 864 totals. Competing individually, PSU's Sarah Willis earned medalist honors via an 11-under 205 (68-70-67).
The Scarlet Knights return to the links at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by Washington, Oct. 9-10, in Seattle.
"We have a few weeks to get prepared for another strong field in Seattle, but I am pleased with the way we are competing," Williams added.
