CLOSING OUT SEPTEMBER ON BTN
The Rutgers men's soccer team wraps up the month of September traveling to Ohio State to meet the Buckeyes on BTN.
RU is coming off its third-straight Big Ten contest with a 2-0 loss in a Wednesday afternoon matchup with Maryland at Yurcak Field.
While Rutgers had several early chances in the game, it was Maryland (3-3-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) that went on to capture the game winner in the 13th minute and add in an insurance tally late in second half play.
Eli Crognale picked up a loose ball at the left side of the box following a shot on his corner serve to resend the ball into the 18 for Eric Matzelevich's header to hit the crossbar and land inside the goal line at the far post.
Rutgers had one of its best chances for a score not long after the Terps took the 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Bryce Washington fired from eight yards out, however Maryland goalkeeper Dayne St. Claire deflected the ball to keep the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard. Classmate
Kyle Galloway came up with the loose ball, shooting with St. Claire off his line, but the Terp defense thwarted RU's second chance for the equalizer.
Maryland broke through for its second goal as William James Herve drove into the box from the left side to setting up Amar Sejdic.
The Scarlet Knights peppered the Terp goal with several late chances, including RU leading scorer
Jordan Hall sliding in a shot past a Maryland defender towards the right post that was saved by St. Clair with seven minutes to go.
ABOUT OHIO STATE
Ohio State welcomes Rutgers at 1-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 mark in Big Ten play.Â
Like the Scarlet Knights, the Buckeyes have played three-straight Big Ten contests with a 3-1 loss to No. 19 Michigan on Tuesday along with a 0-0 draw with Northwestern on Sept. 21 and a 3-1 setback at Penn State on Sept. 16.Â
Four different Buckeyes have found the back of opponent nets in 2018 with redshirt junior midfielder Jake Scheper topping with stat sheet with four points (1G, 2A).
In goal, redshirt junior Parker Siegfried is holding down a 1.28 goals against average and .700 save percentage along with a pair of shutouts.
LAST TIME AGAINST OHIO STATE
A Buckeye penalty kick was the lone score in the Rutgers men's soccer team's 1-0 loss to Ohio State on Sept. 17 at Yurcak Field.
The scoreless stalemate came to an end with Abdi Mohamed reaching the back left of the net from the penalty mark in the 78th minute.
Ohio State, who entered the game ranked first in the country in shutout percentage, tied its program record for consecutive shutouts having made five-straight.
Miles Hackett led Rutgers with four shots, including a diving header late in the second half off a cross from
Ryan Peterson at the center of net that was blocked to keep the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard.
The Rutgers defense came away with a big stop in the 66th minute. As Mohamed put the restart along the far side of the box into play, Niall Logue redirected the clear toward goal. Scarlet Knight keeper
Rafael Pereira interrupted the potential header by Hunter Roberston.Â
OSU's Brady Blackwell collected the loose ball in front of the duo with Pereira making the stop. Blackwell once again collected the ball with a shot passing the left side of Pereira, but
Brian Hawkins swooped in to make the clear and keep the game scoreless.
