
Daphne Groothuis Named National Offensive Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, N.J – Rutgers field hockey sophomore Daphne Groothuis earned her second accolade of the week as she was named National Offensive Player of the Week by the NFHCA. Groothuis, who was also named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, led the Scarlet Knights to two wins last weekend by notching two goals, five assists and a defensive save.
On Friday, Groothuis scored a goal and also recorded a career-best three assists in a shutout victory over Hofstra. Then in a ranked victory Sunday over No. 18 St. Joe's, the midfielder factored into every RU score with one goal and two assists in the 3-2 win.
This season, Groothuis has at least one goal and one assist in each game for a team-leading three goals, six assists and 12 points on the season. The native of Nieuwerkerk ad IJssel in the Netherlands native has already matched her career-high with six assists.
Groothuis leads the Big Ten at 4.0 points per game, which is third nationally. Her 2.0 assists per game are tied for the nation's lead. Her average of one goal per game is second in the conference and ninth in the nation.
The last Rutgers player to earn national weekly recognition from the NFHCA was Nikki Santore, who earned honorable mention honors on Sept. 14, 2016. Groothuis is the first Rutgers player to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors since the NFHCA started the awards program in 2016.
The Scarlet Knights entered the national rankings this week at No. 23. The team hosts two games this weekend, Friday against Cornell (3 p.m.) and Sunday against No. 6 Princeton (11 a.m.)
