PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers field hockey begins its offseason competition this weekend at the Big Apple International Indoor Championship. The team begins match play on Saturday as they will be in action at 'The Training Center' in Spring City, Pa. Selected matches may be live streamed on Youtube.
Rutgers will enter two teams in the event, the Black squad and the Scarlet squad. The Black team consists of Martha Goodridge, Olivia de Zwaan, Maddie Olshemski, Sophie Kuiper, Samantha Arnold, Lyla Rehill, Kirsta Lilienthal, Olivia Fraticelli and Shivya Desai. That squad competes on Saturday against Maryland, Old Dominion and Vermont
The Scarlet team includes Emily Nicholls, Olivia Beattie, Natalie Arnold, Olivia Stazi, Julia Vinas Nieto, Caroline DeKenipp, Anna Cogdell, Maddie Kidd and Camryn Johnson. They are set to face Albany, Delaware and Drexel on Saturday. Pending the results on Saturday's games, on Sunday is crossover, classifications and finals matchups.
The program has a history of strong performances at this event. Last season, the Scarlet Team took first place, and Emily Nicholls was named the MVP of the Collegiate Division. Nicholls earned the MVP honors from her performance as the team's goalkeeper in backstopping the squad to four wins and a tie, allowing just four goals across five games.
RU has now had at least one team medal in the past six times they have competed, including a third place finish in 2018 and four second place finishes in 2019, 2020, 2023 and 2024. Two years ago, RU had its two teams finish second and fourth, marking the first time where both RU team entrants reached the semifinals and played for a medal.
The Big Apple International Indoor Championship is the first of four competitions that RU has on the recently announced spring schedule. Rutgers is set to play in three games away from home in April, when RU will travel to Lafayette (April 10), Monmouth (April 18) and Princeton (April 24).
