Women’s Soccer Draws with La Salle in Rematch of 2017 NCAA First Round

Scarlet Knights conclude nonconference action at 4-1-2
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – On a rainy Sunday afternoon, Rutgers and La Salle played to a 2-2 double overtime draw at Yurcak Field. The Explorers (4-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a penalty kick before the Scarlet Knights (4-1-2) countered with back-to-back goals in the second stanza. La Salle, however, balanced the score later in the period to settle the 2017 NCAA Tournament First Round rematch as a tie.
QUICK STATS
Sophomore forwards Nneka Moneme and Jenna Sayers posted the goals for RU, while senior midfielder Taylor Aylmer and sophomore midfielder Gabby Provenzano added assists in the draw.
La Salle's goalkeeper Claudia Jenkins registered nine saves against the Scarlet Knight offense. Jenna Soriano and Amirah Louketis added the goals.
Overall, RU lead La Salle in shots (31-8), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (7-5).
THE MATCH
La Salle took a 1-0 lead in the match on a penalty kick by Soriano in the 13th minute of the contest.
From there, RU controlled possession of the first half by outshooting La Salle, 10-3, and leading in corners, 5-0. The Explorers goalkeeper, however, recorded five saves in the frame.
Rutgers returned from the break with energy, as Moneme capitalized on the momentum. Off an assist from Aylmer, Moneme shot point blank to register the equalizer, balancing the score 1-1.
The Scarlet Knights would go on to add another goal for the lead. In the 74th minute, Sayers took the shot from the top ccenter of the box off an assist from Provenzano for her first career goal and a 2-1 RU lead.
In the 57th minute, La Salle countered with an equalizer of its own. The Explorers' Louketis scored from about 25 yards out to balance the score at 2-2. Following two overtime periods, the score would remain locked at 2-2 for the draw.

Rutgers begins Big Ten action with two home matches, starting with Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. The Scarlet Knights then host Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
