Tennis Sweeps Delaware in Season Opener

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis defeated Delaware, 7-0, in its season opener on Friday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights claimed the doubles point and six singles wins for the victory. Rutgers improved to 1-0, while Delaware dropped to 1-2.
"Today was a good test for our first match," said Head Coach Hilary Ritchie. "Delaware came to compete and they looked really good. With having to two freshmen in the lineup, I thought we handled the match very well. I think it was good for our first finish, but we know we have to keep working."
DOUBLES
At the No. 1 spot, he duo of junior Kat Muzik and freshman Tess Fisher topped their opponents Viva Laas and Tayo Adetunji by a score of 6-3 to give RU an advantage.
The pair of junior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Sydney Kaplan then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Delaware's Draga Sabotic and Sarah Whited.
SINGLES
Freshman Kristiana Zahare opened singles play with a win for RU, defeating the Blue Hens' Draga Sabotic by a commanding score of 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Isabelle Da Silva followed with a win at the No. 6 singles, claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Adetunji.
At the No. 4 spot, Cochrane clinched the match for RU. After earning a 6-4 win in the first set, the junior rallied from behind for a 7-6 (3) win in the second.
Kaplan rallied a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over Sarah Hall, while sophomore Maya Jacobs followed with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 rally of her own at the No. 1 position.
Muzik sealed the sweep with a tremendous battle at the No. 2 spot, battling a 7-6 (4) win in the first and a 10-8 win in the third.
