PISCATAWAY, N.J. - For the second straight game, junior forward Nneka Moneme registered the golden goal to lift No. 22/20 Rutgers women's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Indiana on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights posted the win on Senior Day to improve to 12-2-2 overall and 6-2-1 in Big Ten play.
Prior to the contest, Rutgers honored its graduating class – Taylor Aylmer, Carina Hendley, Megan Katona, Brittany LaPlant, Jenna Sayers, Brianna Starr, Chantelle Swaby, Amanda Visco, Tiernny Wiltshire – in a Senior Day ceremony.
QUICK STATS
Moneme recorded her eighth goal and fourth game winner of the year. Sophomore defender Shea Holland registered her first career assist, while senior midfielder Taylor Aylmer added her team-leading seventh of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meagan McClelland notched her 10th shutout of the year, posting a save in the victory. Indiana's goalkeeper Bethany Kopel recorded five saves against Rutgers' attempts.
THE MATCH
Although Rutgers led the first half in shots, 6-2, Indiana's keeper tallied two big stops to keep the game scoreless. The Scarlet Knights' best chance came as on a Tiernny Wiltshire shot to the top left corner in the 44th minute, which was punched out at the last second by the keeper for a 0-0 score at the break.
Returning from halftime, Rutgers held strong on its attack through the second half. RU rattled off nine shots which were just high or wide due to the rainy weather, as three were stopped by the keeper. In turn the Scarlet Knight defense, held the Hoosiers to just two second half shots, sending the game into overtime still with a scorless tie.
In the 93rd minute, a foul on Indiana resulted in a Rutgers set piece at the top left corner of the box. Aylmer sent in the cross to Holland who kept the possession alive. Moneme used her first touch off Holland's pass for the shot, as the ball ricocheted in for the win.
ALUMNI DAY
The Scarlet Knights also welcomed back and honored the 1984 Rutgers women's soccer team, the first ever squad in program history. The 1984 team members played a crucial role in getting women's soccer added as a varsity sport here at RU. The group and additional alumni in attendance celebrated 35 years of women's soccer at RU.
