Women’s Hoops Tops Fordham in Charity Exhibition

Tekia Mack nets 26 points in the Scarlet Knights’ final tune-up
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 26, 2019) – Rutgers women's basketball led coast-to-coast in a 73-57 exhibition victory at Fordham on Saturday afternoon in the Rose Hill Gym. All proceeds from the open exhibition benefitted the Bahamas Red Cross Hurricane Relief.
Junior Tekia Mack netted 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and an 8-of-9 mark from the free throw line. The Chicago, Ill. native has a regular-season career high of 24 points from last season at Indiana. Mack added three rebounds, an assist and a steal in a game-high 37 minutes on court.
Senior center Jordan Wallace put together a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while redshirt junior guard Arella Guirantes added a well-rounded stat line of 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Rutgers established an early lead, finishing the first quarter up 18-10. The defensively dominant first half ended with just 23 points on the board for the Rams, as RU carried a 10-point lead into half. Fordham cut the lead to 46-39 through three quarters before Mack and the offense exploded for 27 points in the final period to set the 16-point final margin.
Graduate student guard Khadaizha Sanders spread around seven assists to an efficient offense that shot 47 percent from the field despite a 2-of-16 struggle from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Noga Peleg Pelc and graduate student Danielle Migliore each added a pair of assists in significant minutes off the bench.
Junior forward Mael Gilles had Rutgers' lone blocked shot of the contest, while scoring four points and grabbing four rebounds. Freshmen Maori Davenport and Joiya Maddox saw action in the exhibition with Davenport hauling in four rebounds and Maddox hitting the only shot she took – a bullseye from three-point range.
The Scarlet Knights officially open the 2019-20 season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at South Alabama in the home state of Davenport, Maddox and sophomore Zipporah Broughton.
