Wrestling Wraps Up Weekend Action at Journeymen Classic

TROY, N.Y. – Though not an official date on its schedule, Rutgers wrestling had both attached and unattached competitors at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York.
Unattached Scarlet Knights registered the biggest victories on Sunday. Rookie Sammy Alvarez (133) knocked off two ranked foes, which included a 3-1 decision over No. 7 D.J. Fehlman (Lock Haven), a two-time NCAA qualifier and 2019 EWL champion. The victory helped Alvarez finish first in the 133 A Pool. Alvarez also collected a 12-2 major decision over No. 17 Anthony Madrigal (Oklahoma) during his impressive morning.
Jordan Pagano (197) also downed two ranked opponents with decisions over No. 16 Jake Jakobsen (Lehigh) and Jake Woodley (Oklahoma). Pagano finished with a 2-1 record after he dropped a hard-fought 5-1 decision against No. 10 Eric Schultz (Nebraska).
Wrestling attached, Gerard Angelo (149) picked up two victories, including a first-period pin on reigning NCAA II champion Chris Eddins Jr. of Pitt-Johnstown to finish third in his A Pool. Brett Donner (165) a Matthew Correnti (197) both collected identical 4-0 records. Wrestling attached, Kyle Lightner (197) also went undefeated with a 3-0 mark in Pool D action.
Rutgers next official date on its 2019-20 schedule is Friday, Nov. 15, when the Scarlet Knights face Fresno State in Fresno, California. RU will also face Cal State Bakersfield (Nov. 16) during the west-coast road trip.
