Olivieri Captures Unattached Title at ESU Open

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Wrestling unattached, Anthony Olivieri (174) secured an individual title at the ESU Open, held on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The redshirt junior went 4-0 in his bracket and capped his undefeated day with an 8-2 decision over Colin Shannon (Unattached-American) for the 174-pound title.
Olivieri opened the tournament with a fall over Ramon Castillo (Emmanuel College) and followed with a 2-0 decision in the quarterfinals. Olivieri then used a takedown in the first period to earn a 2-0 decision over Jack Bond (Unattached-Old Dominion) in their semifinal bout to advance to the championship match. The East Hanover, New Jersey, native is now 5-0 this season after he picked up a decision in the season opener against Centenary on Nov. 2 at the RAC.
Wrestling unattached, rookie Devon Britton (133) used three consecutive victories, including an 11-2 major decision over Jacy Jones (Centenary) in the opening round, to reach the 133-pound final, where he medically withdrew to finish second. Shane Metzler (133) advanced to the semifinals of his bracket wrestling unattached and finished his day third with a 4-1 record.
Andrew Gapas (141) collected two victories wrestling unattached, advancing to the semifinals of his bracket to round out action for Scarlet Knight wrestlers.
Rutgers next official date on its 2019-20 schedule is Friday, Nov. 15, when the Scarlet Knights face Fresno State in Fresno, California. RU will also face Cal State Bakersfield (Nov. 16) during the west-coast road trip.
