Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Edged by Liberty & McNeese State in Texas

Anyssa Iliopoulos drives in four runs on Friday, has RBIs in five straight

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 15, 2019) – Junior right fielder Anyssa Iliopoulos drove in all but one of Rutgers softball's runs on Friday at the Texas A&M Invitational, but the Scarlet Knights (3-4) suffered a pair of close losses to begin the tournament at Davis Diamond – 2-1 to Liberty and 6-4 to McNeese State.

"It was a tough day," said head coach Kristen Butler. "We made some great defensive plays to get us out of innings. We need to do a better job at the plate continuing to adjust throughout the whole game. We are going to get good rest tonight and will watch some film to get ready for tomorrow."

LIBERTY ESCAPES PITCHER'S DUEL

Liberty (2-4) 2
Rutgers (3-3) 1

STANDOUT STATS
  • Senior starting pitcher Whitney Jones was brilliant, hurling a complete game without allowing an earned run in six innings of work. She allowed three hits and a walk, and took a hard-luck loss to fall 2-2 on the year after two unearned runs cross the plate due to a fielding error.
  • Junior right fielder Anyssa Iliopoulos accounted for Rutgers' only run with a solo homer in the fifth.
  • All of Rutgers' three hits went for extra bases with senior shortstop Jess Hughes and junior first baseman Nicole Bowman each hitting a double.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Hughes led off the game with a double, but Liberty's Julia DiMartino escaped the frame unscathed.
  • After allowing a leadoff single to start the game, Jones sat down seven Flames in a row before the streak was broken by a two-base fielding error in the outfield with one out in the bottom of the third. Jones got the second out, which advanced the runner to third, then Liberty capitalized on an intentional walk and a stolen base with a two-run single for a pair of unearned runs – which ended up being the difference.
  • Iliopoulos cut the deficit in half with her fourth home run of the season leading off the fifth. The junior slugger took a full-count pitch deep to left field for the solo shot.
  • Bowman's double immediately followed Iliopoulos' homer, still with no one out. A botched bunt and a strikeout halted the momentum and the Flames escaped with the lead intact.
  • Jones faced the minimum batters possible from the fourth inning on. She allowed a hit in the fifth, which was erased by Rutgers' first double play of the year turned by Hughes and freshman second baseman Aleah Marra in the middle infield.

MCNEESE HOLDS ON TO LATE LEAD

McNeese State (4-3) 6
Rutgers (3-4) 4

STANDOUT STATS
  • Iliopoulos went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Seven of her eight hits this season have gone for extra bases for a 1.045 slugging percentage.
  • Hughes got on base three times and scored two runs with a single, walk and a hit by pitch.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Iliopoulos started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a one-out double to the left-center field gap, scoring Hughes, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the home half of the frame.
  • The Cowgirls responded immediately in the top of the second with four runs on a two-run home run, an RBI double, and a steal of home.
  • Rutgers tied it at 4-4 in the third inning with Iliopoulos' second double of the game plating two, and thanks to her heads up base running on the play, scored from third during the next at-bat on freshman catcher Katie Wingert's RBI groundout.
  • Rutgers' defense kept the score deadlocked. Wingert threw out a base stealer in the third, the infield turned a 5-2-3-6-4 double play to escape a second and third, one-out jam in the fourth, and freshman starting pitcher Corah Price escaped a runner on third, no out situation without allowing a run in the sixth.
  • McNeese took the lead for good with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh before slamming the door with a 1-2-3 in the final inning.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • This is Rutgers' first loss this season when scoring first (3-1).
  • Iliopoulos has reached base safely in each of Rutgers' first seven games. She has an RBI in five straight and in six of Rutgers' seven games.
  • Hughes has a team-best five-game hitting streak.
