Softball Shuts Out Virginia

Jones & Price combine on shutout while Iliopoulos & Wingert drive in two apiece

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Feb. 28, 2019) – Rutgers softball (7-9) picked up its first shutout of the season with a 4-0 blanking of Virginia (5-9) on Thursday.

QUICK PITCH
Senior starting pitcher Whitney Jones went 5.2 scoreless for the win and freshman Corah Price nailed down the four-out save in a combined shutout. Junior right fielder Anyssa Iliopoulos provided the offensive spark with a two-run triple, while freshman catcher Katie Wingert had a pair of RBI hits.

"We're very happy with Katie's performance and Anyssa's continued production," said head coach Kristen Butler. "It was a great performance by Whitney with the shutout, Corah getting the save, and the clutch hitting. We came off a long bus trip ready to go tonight."

STANDOUT STATS
  • Wingert was 3-for-4 with three consecutive hits, capped by an RBI double.
  • Jones allowed just two hits and struck out three while walking six.
  • Price struck out two while getting her second save of the year.
  • Senior center fielder Nicolette Anico and sophomore designated player Erin Collins added hits for the Scarlet Knights.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Jones allowed leadoff runners to reach in each of the first four innings, but escaped each time without allowing a run.
  • Rutgers broke through in the third as senior Jess Hughes and Anico walked to set up Iliopoulos' two-run triple, which sliced down the right field line away from the fielder and into the corner. Wingert immediately followed with an RBI single for the 3-0 lead.
  • The defense ended the fifth inning after a Cavalier hit a double and Anico threw out a runner that overran third base.
  • Wingert added some insurance in the top of the seventh after Anico singled and stole second. The rookie catcher's third consecutive base hit easily chased Anico home and Rutgers led 4-0.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Iliopoulos' triple was Rutgers' first three-bagger of the season.
  • Rutgers has scored first in six of its seven victories.
  • Rutgers had two saves all of last season. Price has two by herself this season.
