Six Scarlet Knights heading to Pittsburgh next week for nationals
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Joseph Grello (174) earned an at-large qualifying bid for the 2019 NCAA Championships, announced Tuesday. Rutgers wrestling will now have six competitors at nationals from March 21-23 in Pittsburgh, as Grello joins Nick Suriano (133), Peter Lipari (141), Anthony Ashnault (149), John Van Brill (157) and Nicholas Gravina (184) next week on the sport's biggest stage.
This marks the first NCAA Championships' appearance of Grello's career, as he and Lipari will compete at nationals for the first time. Suriano and Van Brill are three-time qualifiers, while Ashnault and Gravina are just the fifth and sixth wrestlers, respectively, to qualify four times in program history.
Brackets and seeding for the NCAA Championships will be announced Wednesday night, with NCAA.com streaming the reveal of each weight-classes' bracket beginning at 6 p.m. ET. This year, all 33 wrestlers in each weight class will receive a seed for the tournament.
Ranked No. 26 in the latest Coaches Panel rankings and No. 28 in the latest RPI, Grello (16-9) went 2-2 at the Big Ten Championships this past weekend, closing out the tournament with wins over Jake Covaciu (Indiana) and Mitch Bowman (Iowa) to finish ninth in his weight class. Grello went 14-7 during the regular season, which included an 11-5 dual record and a 5-3 mark in Big Ten Conference action. Grello also finished third on the team in dual points with 43.
The six Scarlet Knights at nationals this year marks the fifth consecutive year five or more Scarlet Knights head to the NCAA Championships. In total, 70 wrestlers from RU have qualified for nationals under the guidance of head coach Scott Goodale.
