Softball Sweeps Saturday Slate at Liberty Classic

Scarlet Knights top Robert Morris, 8-0, and Quinnipiac, 9-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. (March 2, 2019) – Rutgers softball (9-9) shut out Robert Morris (2-7) by a score of 8-0 and run-ruled Quinnipiac (4-4) by a 9-1 margin to kick off play at the Liberty Softball Classic at Kamphuis Field on Saturday.

SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUT

31099
QUICK PITCH
Six different Scarlet Knights contributed RBIs in an eight-hit offensive display, which was more than enough for the pitching staff's second consecutive shutout. Senior starting pitcher Whitney Jones won her third straight start, and junior Cambria Keefer finished the clean sheet with two perfect frames as Rutgers put together back-to-back shutout victories for the first time since April 3, 2014 in a doubleheader sweep of Villanova.

STANDOUT STATS
  • In her first start of the season behind the plate, sophomore Christine Malito stepped up with Rutgers' only multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Sophomore first baseman Madyson Cole went 0-for-3, but provided great situational hitting with two RBIs in two separate fielder's choice outs.
  • Jones has won each of her last three starts, going five frames strong in this one with three hits and a walk allowed to go with one strikeout.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Rutgers broke out in the third with three runs on three hits, led off by back-to-back doubles by junior outfielder Anyssa Iliopoulos and freshman designated player Katie Wingert. Sophomore right fielder Erin Collins knocked an RBI single before freshman second baseman Aleah Marra and Cole recorded fielder's choice RBIs for the 4-0 lead.
  • Sophomore third baseman Myah Moy broke an 0-for-18 slide with a hard-hit double to the right-center field gap to drive home a run in the fifth.
  • Wingert's sac fly in the sixth and Malito's RBI single in the seventh provided the 8-0 cushion.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Rutgers' five stolen bases were the most in a single game since five against Ohio State on April 8, 2016.
  • Rutgers has scored first in eight of its nine wins.
  • Rutgers improves to 4-1 when scoring six or more runs.

COLE & COLLINS HOMER TO PACE RUN-RULE VICTORY
31102

QUICK PITCH
The Scarlet Knights scored in each of the first four innings, which is all they would need in a run-rule shortened game that freshman pitcher Corah Price won after four innings of one-run and one-hit softball. Sophomore first baseman Madyson Cole and sophomore right fielder Erin Collins provided the pop with home runs, as Hughes and Iliopoulos each went 3-for-3.

"We're very proud of the pitchers today with only one earned run," said head coach Kristen Butler. "Defense starts with the pitching. The offense did a good job adjusting throughout the whole day. We saw five different pitchers and scored in almost every inning with a bunch of different looks. We'll come out tomorrow against Robert Morris and try to sweep the road trip."

STANDOUT STATS
  • Iliopoulos had threes across the board – 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. She also stole two bases.
  • Collins drove home three runs on a pair of extra base hits, a double and her second homer of the year.
  • Price only allowed one hit – a solo home run – in her four innings with zero walks and four strikeouts.
THE RUNDOWN
  • Price retired the first nine Bobcats of the game before surrendering a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth.
  • The RU offense was already supporting its starting pitcher in bunches as Iliopoulos and Collins drove home runs via doubles in the bottom of the first.
  • Cole's first collegiate home run led off the second inning.
  • Sophomore third baseman Myah Moy added a pair of runs on a gapped double to right center – her second two-bagger of the day after doubling against Robert Morris on Saturday morning.
  • Iliopoulos ran her season RBI total to 23 with a two-run single in the fourth, followed by Collins' two-run shot to invoke the eight-run rule.
KNIGHT NOTES
  • Rutgers has scored first in eight of its nine wins.
  • After stealing five bases in the morning game – the most since 2016 – Rutgers stole six against Quinnipiac – the most in a single game since six against Stony Brook on April 19, 2011.
  • Hughes has reached base safely nine straight games, the Scarlet Knights' longest such streak of the season.
