PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 30, 2019) – Rutgers softball (16-17, 0-6) dropped Saturday's doubleheader to No. 23 Michigan (23-10, 6-0) by scores of 7-0 and 7-4 as the Wolverines earned a Big Ten series sweep at the RU Softball Complex.
QUICK PITCH
- Following a 7-0 shutout at the hands of Michigan pitcher Meghan Beaubien in Game 1, the Rutgers bats broke out in the third inning of Game 2 as freshman catcher Katie Wingert launched her ninth home run of the season, a three-run job to cut a Michigan lead to 5-3. But Michigan answered with some more offense of its own to extend, and eventually, hold the lead.
STANDOUT STATS
- Junior first baseman Nicole Bowman had a pair of hits in each game against Michigan pitching. She went 2-for-3 in the opener, then went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple in the second game of the twinbill.
- Hughes had a hit in each contest, including a single down the left field line ahead of Wingert in the third inning of Game 2. She would come around to score her team-leading 33rd run of the season on Wingert's long ball.
- Wingert's three RBIs on one swing drove her season total to 29, which ties Anyssa Iliopoulos for the team lead.
KNIGHT NOTES
- Hughes, who hit in every game of the Michigan series, ran her overall hitting streak to six straight games while also reaching base safely in seven straight.
