Murray Named All-Big Ten Second Team

McNamara merits Big Ten Sportsmanship Award

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior Tevin Murray of the Rutgers baseball team earned All-Big Ten Second Team in the conference release distributed Tuesday. It marks the highest postseason league honor for a Scarlet Knight pitcher since 2007. In addition, senior Tyler McNamara garnered the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

"Tevin got off to a slow start, but he really stepped it up once we hit conference play," head coach Joe Litterio said. "He put in a lot of hard work to become a weekend starter and achieve success this season. We are very happy for Tevin, this is a well-deserved award."

Murray finished third in the Big Ten with a 1.75 ERA in conference play over eight starts and 46.1 innings. Five of the outings went without permitting an earned run and 7-of-8 saw two earned runs or less cross. It was the best ERA inside the league for a qualifying Rutgers starter this century and second only behind Rob Corsi's 1.27 mark in 12 relief stints in 2011 in the Big East. In addition, Murray held Big Ten batters to a .178 average against, ranked second, and struck out 49.

Overall, Murray pitched to a team-best 3.01 ERA in 17 games (12 starts) in 2019 with 81 strikeouts, placing sixth in a single season in program history. The left-hander totaled eight appearances with six or more punchouts to sit fifth in the conference at 10.62 strikeouts per nine.

Murray's longest start of the season was an eight-inning victory with two hits scattered, no earned runs allowed and nine strikeouts at Penn State. He earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week on April 15 after tossing six scoreless and one-hit innings with nine fanned to help finish off the sweep of Michigan State.             The Ringtown, Pennsylvania, native also held Iowa, Purdue and Northwestern to zero earned runs in starts this year.

Murray becomes the second RU pitcher to collect All-Big Ten status, as Howie Brey netted third-team honors in 2016. The last Scarlet Knight hurler to notch first or second team all-conference was Steve Healing as a member of the All-Big East Second Team in 2007.

McNamara earned the starting catcher position this season after serving previously as the bullpen catcher and the backup. He played in 94 games over four years for Rutgers with 61 starts, a .355 on-base percentage and 28 RBIs. He had a walk-off single in the 15th inning to beat Ohio State in a four-hit game. Defensively, the East Brunswick native committed only three errors in 440 chances with 15 runners caught stealing. The economics major posted a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester and is a two-time Spring Academic All-Big Ten selection.

"Tyler has been a program guy since day one arriving as a walk-on," Litterio said. "He has been a great teammate and waited his time. After a taste of playing time last year, he worked hard to earn the starting spot as a senior. He has been a leader by example."
