Suriano, Aragona Win 2019 Grapple at the Garden Bouts

Suriano defeats 2018 bronze medalist Colon at MSG

NEW YORK – 2019 NCAA Champion Nick Suriano scored a late takedown to seal a victory over 2018 World Championships bronze medalist Joe Colon and 2019 signee JoJo Aragona pinned his foe to highlight action for Rutgers wrestling on Monday night during the 2019 "Grapple at the Garden" Beat the Streets (BTS) benefit inside the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden.

In the all-star charity event featuring members of Team USA against NCAA champions and All-Americans, Suriano secured one of the signature victories of the night. Tied 1-1 with Colon late in the second period of the 61 kilogram exhibition, Suriano used a single-leg takedown in the closing seconds to earn the win. Colon, a two-time NCAA qualifier at Northern Iowa and the current volunteer assistant coach at Fresno State, entered the night with a host of senior-level credentials, including a bronze medal at the 2019 world championships in Budapest.

Aragona wrestled five-time New York state champion Adam Busiello – a 2019 Arizona State signee – in the 138 pound exhibition match earlier in the night and was the aggressor throughout. The 2019 undefeated NJSIAA state champion scored six points in the opening period – highlighted by a double-leg that sent both wrestlers off the stage and into the stands. In the opening seconds of the second period, Aragona pinned Busiello for the win.

2019 NCAA Champion Anthony Ashnault faced two-time world medalist James Green in a matchup at 70 kilograms. After Green jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the second period, Ashnault fought back with back-to-back takedowns, exiting the match with an 8-4 loss.

Beat the Streets Benefit competitions, which began in 2010, have since become a major showcase of the best of international wrestling. This unique and electrifying annual event has helped Beat the Streets raise millions of dollars to support local youth wrestling programs which empower young people in New York City.
