Hoops & Wrestling to Both Meet Michigan Feb. 1 on Super Saturday at MSG
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers opens its 2019-20 Big Ten schedule at preseason No. 1-ranked Michigan State and plays a designated road game versus Michigan at Madison Square Garden as part of the Conference's annual Super Saturday event that also features the wrestling programs. After competing against the nation's 31st-rated schedule in 2018-19 per Ken Pom, the Scarlet Knights will play 13 of their 31 regular-season games (42%) against opponents currently ranked in Andy Katz's Power 36.
The Big Ten announced its 2019-20 conference basketball schedules today via social media. Analysis of upcoming season's schedules will be featured tonight at 6 p.m. ET live on BTN's B1G Show studio program.
"The conference schedule is obviously a tremendous challenge, and this season is certainly no different," said head coach Steve Pikiell. "Starting with the nation's No. 1-ranked team on the road after playing at Pittsburgh in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge is a tough test, but one that we welcome. There's a lot to be excited about. Teaming with our wrestling program to compete against Michigan at The Garden on Super Saturday is great for our brand, the team, the fans, alumni, and the Big Ten. It's going to be a very unique environment, and we have the potential to be a unique team with a lot of versatility."
Additional details on Super Saturday at MSG, including ticket information, will be announced at a later date. Men's basketball and wrestling season ticket holders will have first opportunity to purchase tickets from the Rutgers allotment, with ticket requests fulfilled based upon priority points. The Wolverines are the home team for both Super Saturday competitions. Fans have the opportunity to secure 2019-20 season tickets online or by calling 866-445-GORU (4678).
Rutgers' Big Ten home schedule begins with Wisconsin (Dec. 11) and also features match-ups with Penn State (Jan. 7), Indiana (Jan. 15), Minnesota (Jan. 19), Nebraska (Jan. 25), Purdue (Jan. 28), Northwestern (Feb. 9), Illinois (Feb. 15), Michigan (Feb. 19) and Maryland (March 3).
On the road in conference action, RU follows its meeting with the Spartans on Dec. 8 by travelling to Nebraska (Jan. 3), Illinois (Jan. 11) and Iowa (Jan. 22) before playing the Wolverines at the World's Most Famous Arena on Feb. 1. Traditional league road games follow at Maryland (Feb. 4), Ohio State (Feb. 12), Wisconsin (Feb. 23), Penn State (Feb. 26) and Purdue (March 7).
The 2020 Big Ten Conference Tournament will take place March 11-15 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
In non-conference play, Rutgers hosts Seton Hall in the Garden State Hardwood Classic and former Atlantic 10 rival UMass during an 11-game slate that includes road games at Pittsburgh and versus St. Bonaventure in Toronto.
Rutgers was named the Most Improved Team of the 2018-19 season by Sports Illustrated in its year-end wards. The Scarlet Knights improved 70 positions in the KenPom.com rankings since the season's initial rating, best among all power conference programs.
Stemming from the progress, Rutgers experienced five sell-outs at the RAC, its most since 2004-05 (7). Average attendance improved 31.1% from 2017-18. RU ranked 65th nationally in percent of capacity (78%) out of 353 D-I programs after placing 232nd in 2017-18 (59.49%).
