Women’s Golf Hosts Another Successful Unger-DeBlasio Cup
Sep 13 | Women's Golf
PISCATAWAY – More than sixty participants played in the seventh annual Unger-DeBlasio Cup at the Rutgers University Golf Course on Friday. Tournament namesakes Jan Unger and Art DeBlasio were among the competitors on a beautiful day for golf that featured light winds, temperatures in the mid-to-high 60's and overcast skies.
Fittingly, Unger was on the winning foursome, which also featured Kathleen Shank, Jackie Mullens and Lori Char.
Alumnae in attendance included Liz (Carl) Fradkin ('12), Stephanie (Yastrub) Ness ('09), Michelle Melia ('96), Danaka (Piltingsrud) Olsen ('02), Jill (Sivley) Henson ('02) and Mullens ('16).
After play concluded, Head Coach Kari Williams honored the program's five present 2018-19 Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholars – Carrie-Ann Lee, Ana Cortes, Char and Harriet Allsebrook. Five 2018-19 WGCAA All-America Scholars – Lee, Cortes, Char, Allsebrook and Maeve Rossi - were also recognized. Ashleigh Greenham, both a Distinguished and All-America Scholar, accepted her honors in spirit from abroad.
Bill Downey earned the Don and Penny Pray Service Award for his work in the community and the Rutgers Business School, while Allsebrook was recognized as the team's Maura Waters Ballard Scoring Champion. The Shropshire, England, native posted a program-record 74.22 scoring average in 2018-19.
In 1977, women's golf became an intercollegiate sport at Rutgers University led by 17-year Head Coach Jan Unger. Directing the Scarlet Knights from 1978-1995, Unger laid the solid foundation that can be attributed to the program's current success. DeBlasio served as the assistant coach under Unger for many years, while holding the position of Head Golf Professional at the Rutgers Golf Course from 1966-2001.
