Women’s Golf Sixth After Day One at Colbert Hills

MANHATTAN, KS – Rutgers women's golf is sixth with a 609 (304-305) total after the first two rounds of the 11-team Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, played Sunday at Colbert Hills Golf Course. Sophomore Maeve Rossi is tied for 10th in the 62-player field with a 148 (76-72) to pace the Scarlet Knights entering Monday's final round.
Rossi registered six birdies and is minus-one on par fives on the par 72, 6,256-yard course that features zoysia fairways and bentgrass greens.
"I hit the ball well today which helped me stay competitive as I struggled with my distance putting," said Rossi. "I felt confident with my irons and look to keep that momentum going into tomorrow's final round. As a team, we each have a few aspects of our game to improve on tomorrow so we can move up the leaderboard and finish strong."
The Scarlet Knights, competing in their initial tournament of the 2019-20 season, are plus-one on par fives, an event-best on the long-yardage holes. RU also accumulated 22 birdies and 101 pars in temperatures ranging from the low 80's to mid-90's with winds gusting up to 21 miles-per-hour.
"Similar to our practice round, the wind was blowing all day and the greens rolled quick," said head coach Kari Williams. "Each player had some good stretches of play throughout the two rounds, coupled with a handful of errors that we can clean up in the final round. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow to move ourselves up the leaderboard, but I believe we have a strong chance to do so."
Senior co-captain Ana Cortes shot a 151 (76-75) to join Rossi among the top 20 in 19th place.
Senior Carrie-Ann Lee, junior Eun Won Park and freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs complete the team scorecard. Lee is tied for 29th with a 154 (75-79), Diederichs is tied for 40th with a 157 (78-79) and Park is tied for 46th with a 160 (77-83). Diedrichs, competing in her initial collegiate event, is minus-two on par five holes, while Park, playing her first tournament as a Scarlet Knight, has 23 pars.
Rutgers is four strokes behind fifth place Kansas and ahead of Texas State, UT-Arlington, Central Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast and Missouri-Kansas City with 18 to play.
The host Wildcats are in first with a 588, two strokes ahead of second place North Texas. KSU's Niamh McSherry is atop the leaderboard with a one-under 141.
Monday's final round will feature an 8 a.m. (CT) shotgun start followed by an awards ceremony on the clubhouse patio. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.
