MANHATTAN, KS – Rutgers women's golf placed sixth with a 908 (304-305-299) total at the 11-team Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, played Sunday and Monday at Colbert Hills Golf Course. Four Scarlet Knights finished among the top 25, as RU was even on par five holes to lead the tournament in the category.
Freshman Anna-Maria Diederichs was minus three on par fives competing in her initial collegiate event. She carded a two-under 70 on Monday, tying for the top round of the day while issuing RU's best of the Invitational.
"It was great to see Anna-Maria shoot under par in her first event for us," said head coach Kari Williams. "She gave herself great scoring opportunities today and putted much better."
Playing in fourth position, Diederichs tied for 21st with a 227 (78-79-70), one stroke behind sophomore Maeve Rossi, who paced Rutgers with a 226 (76-72-78) to tie for 19th in the 62-player field. Rossi was minus-two on par five holes and registered a team-best nine birdies
"Today I felt like my game started to come together out on the course," said Diederichs. "I struck the ball well and putted with more confidence. It was exciting to shoot my first round under par for the team and I look to continue playing well next weekend."
The Scarlet Knights compiled 32 birdies and 156 pars on the par 72, 6,256-yard course featuring zoysia fairways and bentgrass greens.
"We started both days playing well and making a few birdies," said Williams. "Again, we struggled in the middle of our round and we will have a few areas to work on at practice this week to get ready for Penn State."
Seniors Carrie-Ann Lee (75-79-74) and Ana Cortes (76-75-77) both shot 228 to tie for 24th. Lee had eight birdies and Cortes counted a team-best 33 pars.
Junior Eun Won Park, a transfer student-athlete playing her first event as a Scarlet Knight, tied for 51st with a 241 (77-83-81).
Competing in its initial tournament of the 2019-20 season, Rutgers placed ahead of Texas State, Central Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, Missouri-Kansas City and UT-Arlington.
The host Wildcats won the Invitational with an 881 (295-293-293), besting second place North Texas by two strokes. KSU's Niamh McSherry captured individual medalist honors with a five-under 211 (70-71-70).
Rutgers returns to the links Saturday and Sunday at the Nittany Lion Invitational in University Park, Pa.
