No. 18 Field Hockey Drops Hard Fought Battle with No. 4 Maryland

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 18 Rutgers field hockey battled No. 4 Maryland (9-1, 1-0) throughout their Big Ten Conference opener, ultimately falling 2-1. Tayla Parkes scored the goal for the Scarlet Knights (4-4, 0-1), while goalkeeper Gianna Glatz made eight saves.
Maryland struck first eight minutes into the game. Bodil Keus chipped a long ball into the circle, and Linda Cobano deflected it in. In the third quarter, Cobano tallied her second goal of the game for a 2-0 advantage.
The Scarlet Knights goal game in the fourth quarter. After a corner, Milena Redlingshoefer put the ball on goal, and Parkes knocked it home to cut into the deficit.
RU had a series of chances for another tally, including a shot from Katie Larmour that was saved off the line by a Maryland back. The Scarlet Knights pressed hard, but ultimately fell one goal short.
"I'm incredibly proud of how the team competed in this game," head coach Meredith CIvico said. "We were aggressive. We attacked. We just need to be a bit more composed and take better advantage of our opportunities."
The Scarlet Knights will head to Iowa City, Iowa next weekend, taking on No. 8 Iowa Friday at 3 p.m. and UC Davis on Saturday at 1 p.m.
