PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 20/14 Rutgers women's soccer dropped its contest against Maryland, 2-1, on Saturday night at Yurcak Field. Despite freshman midfielder Julia Aronov making it a one goal game in the second half, the Scarlet Knights comeback fell just short.
QUICK STATS
Aronov, in the first start of her career, recorded her second goal of the year for RU. Sophomore goalkeeper Meagan McClelland notched six saves in the contest, her fourth game this season with five or more saves.
RU led the game in all stats categories, including 16-11 in shots, 9-3 in corners, and 6-5 in saves. The Scarlet Knights outshot the Terrapins 12-5 in the second half, as UMD's goalkeeper Erin Seppi collect five saves in the frame.
THE MATCH
It was a shootout between Rutgers (7-2-1, 1-2-0 Big Ten) and Maryland (6-3-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten) across the first half, as UMD held a 6-4 edge in shots. McClelland made three stops in the stanza, but Maryland managed goals on a fast break that ended up 1-on-1 with the keeper and on a set piece. Although Rutgers led corners 4-1 in the frame, the Scarlet Knights were unable to cut into the deficit.
After the break, Rutgers came out firing, posting four shots in the opening 10 minutes. Three of those shots would be saved by Maryland's keeper. Then in the 62nd minute, Aronov found the back of the net. Off a deflection from a defender, Aronov played up to the ball, using her first touch to send it to the upper right corner.
The Scarlet Knights strong attack on offense in the second half, leading shots 12-5, would fall just short in the comeback.
