Tennis Starts Off 2020 with Win Over Army
Jan 24 | Women's Tennis
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis defeated Army 6-1 at the East Brunswick Racquet Club on Friday afternoon to open the 2020 season. The Scarlet Knights claimed the doubles point, as well as five singles matches for the win.
"Today was really good, we've been focusing the last two weeks on really high intensity and really high effort. And we brought that intensity every single day to practice so it was nice that we could also bring it to our first match and get that a win," said senior Jaci Cochrane.
"The win gives us a lot of confidence moving to the next matches. We're just taking the season match by match. Not focusing on who the opponent is and playing everybody the same way whether it's conference or non-conference."
The duo of Maya Jacobs and Cochrane claimed a straight set win in the No. 3 spot, with Tess Fisher and Sydney Kaplan following close behind in the No. 2 spot with a 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point.
However, at the No. 1 spot, Sydney Jones and Kristiana Zahare were edged out 6-4 by Army's Stephanie Dolehide and Caroline Vincent.
Rutgers continued to dominate in the singles with a win for Cochrane in the No. 5 spot. She topped Samantha DiMaio 6-1, 6-3 to advance the Scarlet Knights 2-0.
Jones and Zahare were both able to bounce back from their doubles match and claim victories over their respective singles opponents. At the No. 3 spot, Jones defeated Army's Elizabeth Gilbert 6-3, 6-1. Zahare clinched the match for the Scarlet Knights 7-6 (3-0), 6-2 in the No. 6 spot over Hannah Boubel.
Fisher met Ana Joyner in the No. 1 spot for a hard fought three sets, and came out on top 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Kaplan also took her opponent to three sets for a victory, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 spot over Caroline Vincent.
Jacobs fought through the third set in the No. 2 spot, being edged by Stephanie Dolehide 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.
