Tennis Picks Up Road Win at Drexel
Jan 25 | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA, PA. – Rutgers tennis battled to a hard fought road victory over Drexel at the Hecht Tennis Center on Saturday evening. The Scarlet Knights took the team doubles point and three singles victories to secure the 4-3 win.
RU moved to 2-0 on the season after opening the year on Friday with a 6-1, home win over Army.
Rutgers swept the doubles matchups with identical 6-4 for marks across all three matches. The duo of Maya Jacobs and Jaci Cochrane posted the first win at the No. 3 spot over Drexel's Salma Ziouti and Sarka Richeterova. At the No. 2 spot, the pair of Tess Fisher and Sydney Kaplan kept the momentum rolling, topping opponents Ghita Benhadi and Marta Martinez to capture a 1-0 lead in the contest.
Sydney Jones and Kristiana Zahare teamed up at the No. 1 spot, adding a win of their own to round out the doubles action.
The energy from winning doubles carried the Scarlet Knights through a tight battle in singles. Cochrane led things off with a straight set (6-0, 6-0) win at the No. 5 spot, marking the second consecutive match she contributed the first singles win of the day.
Although Drexel added the next win at the No. 1 spot, Zahare locked in a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 slot to extend RU's lead to 3-1.
Jacobs then clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot for RU, pushing the Scarlet Knights to a 2-0 record to start the year.
Rutgers travels to Providence, Rhode Island, for matches against Brown (Feb. 1) and University of Rhode Island (Feb. 2).
