PISCATAWAY, N.J. – In a back-and-forth matchup that came down to the last bout of the afternoon, No. 22 Rutgers (8-4, 3-3) dropped a 20-18 Big Ten Conference dual to No. 13 Purdue (11-2, 3-1) on Sunday in front of 4,240 fans at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights worked four wins over the Boilermakers – including a second-period fall from rookie
Jackson Turley (165) – but Purdue's win at 141 pounds in the final match proved the different.
No. 9
Sammy Alvarez (133) and No. 20
Billy Janzer (184) locked up decisions, while No. 20
Jordan Pagano (197) secured six team points via injury default against No. 7 Christian Brunner to have the dual come down to the last match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• RU dropped its first two bouts of the afternoon, as
Gerard Angelo (149) lost a 9-5 decision to 2019 NCAA qualifier Nate Limmex while
Michael VanBrill wrestled hard in a tight 6-2 loss to No. 8 Kendall Coleman. The pair of victories gave Purdue an early 6-0 lead.
• Turley provided the jolt Rutgers needed in his bout with Tanner Webster, exploding for an early 8-0 lead in the first period with a takedown, a two-point near fall and a four-point tilt close to the home bench. With a neutral start in the second, Turley landed a double leg at the 1:41 mark in the period and then locked up Webster in a cradle for the fall at 3:45. The pin tied the dual at 6-6.
• After a loss by major from
Anthony Olivieri (174) to No. 4 Dylan Lydy, Janzer took on 2019 NCAA qualifier Max Lyon, as both traded escape points to force sudden victory. Janzer was the aggressor in the overtime period, as he used an ankle pick on Lyon's left leg to swoop in for the takedown and the 3-1 final. The win moved Janzer to an impressive 11-1 in duals this season, which includes a 5-1 mark in Big Ten action.
• The Scarlet Knights took their first lead of the afternoon after Pagano was awarded six team points via injury default, as RU held a 15-10 advantage with four bouts to go.
•
Matthew Correnti (HWT) saw his second consecutive appearance at 285 pounds, this time against No. 25 Thomas Penola. Trailing 1-0 to begin period three, Correnti earned a quick escape and then landed an ankle pick of his own with 1:25 left in the match for a 3-2 lead. Penola was able to reverse Correnti in the closing seconds, but Correnti's riding-time advantage forced sudden victory. Penola would hold on to win with a takedown for a 6-4 final.
• A loss from
Nicolas Aguilar (125) by major to No. 8 Devin Schroder gave Purdue the lead at 17-15, but Alvarez would reclaim control against Travis Ford-Melton. After a scoreless first, Alvarez notched an escape point and followed a scramble with a takedown for a 3-0 with two minutes left in the match. Alvarez sealed the win with another takedown and the riding time point for the 6-0 final, giving RU back the lead at 18-17.
• In a winner-take-all scenario,
JoJo Aragona (141) squared up with Parker Filius. Aragona drove Filius into the mat for an early 2-0 lead. Filius followed with an escape in the first and another in the second, with Aragona owning 1:15 of RT heading into period three. Needing to get out to secure the dual, Aragona was unable to break free which ate into his riding-time advantage and forced sudden victory. There, Filius used a takedown to secure the dual for Purdue.
