Scarlet Knights lose to Maryland on tiebreaker in opening round
PALM COAST, Fla. – Rutgers men's golf closed out the first day of the 2020 Big Ten Match Play Championships on Friday afternoon on the Ocean Course at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida. The sixth-seeded Scarlet Knights registered a 3-3 tie against No. 11 Maryland in the opening round, but the Terps advanced to the quarterfinals via total holes won.
Junior Christopher Gotterup (3&1) and Oliver Whatley (1UP) and sophomore Shayler Dance (2&1) all collected individual victories against UMD in the No. 1, 5 and 6 positions, respectively. RU will continue in the consolation bracket of the championships beginning Saturday morning at 8 a.m. ET.
Gotterup earned a commanding 3&1 victory over Peter Knade, who entered the championships ranked No. 99 overall in the country with a 70.52 adjusted scoring average. Gotterup is the highest-ranked individual in the Big Ten Conference at No. 28 overall in the country with a 70.06 adjusted scoring average during the fall as he continues to establish himself as one of the top golfers in the nation.
