Men’s Golf Begins Spring Play at 2020 Big Ten Match Play Championship

Scarlet Knights compete Friday and Saturday in Palm Coast, Florida
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's golf begins the 2020 spring campaign this weekend when it competes at the Big Ten Match Play Championship Friday and Saturday. The event takes place on the Ocean Course at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
The Scarlet Knights open the two-day tournament as the No. 6 seed in the 13-team field, with Illinois the lone Big Ten program not competing at the championship. RU faces No. 11 Maryland in the opening round, which begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET Friday morning. The winner of the opening-round matchup faces No. 3 Minnesota later that afternoon.
RU is currently ranked sixth in the Big Ten Conference and No. 75 in the country heading into the spring as it looks to improve its resume for the postseason. Junior Christopher Gotterup is the highest-ranked individual in the conference at No. 28 overall in the country with a 70.06 adjusted scoring average during the fall.

Lineup
Head coach Rob Shutte will bring senior Tony Jiang, juniors Gotterup and Oliver Whatley, sophomores Shayler Dance and Jack Doherty and rookies Brendan Hansen and Xavier Marcoux. Six players will compete at a time during each round.
At Last Year's Match Play
Rutgers finished 10th at the championship last season, which included head-to-head wins against No. 3 Iowa and No. 9 Indiana during the second day of the tournament. Whatley and Bobby Weise each produced two individual wins to help the Scarlet Knights during Saturday play. Dance and Gotterup contributed wins against the Hawkeyes, while Jiang and Putt Sridama added victories against the Hoosiers.
