Men's Basketball Seniors to Be Honored

Tuesday night will be Rutgers men's basketball's annual Senior Night. Prior to the game against No. 9 Maryland, five members of the program will be recognized for their contributions to the team. Three student-athletes (Akwasi Yeboah, Shaq Carter and Joey Downes) along with two student managers (Mike Sasso and Scott Scherer) will be recognized for all they have given to the Scarlet Knights basketball program.

The night is sure to be a memorable one for all involved. Both Akwasi Yeboah and Shaq Carter will have their mother make her first trip to The RAC to see her son play. Joey Downes will celebrate four years of accomplishments alongside a host of family and friends. And Rutgers' two senior managers will take a rare moment to step out of their behind-the-scenes role to be honored at center court.

Shaq, he’s just been one of the best kids. From the first time I made a phone call to him for recruiting, he was so humble, appreciative, and thankful. I've seen him grow, and I just wish he had two more years with the program. It’s been too short of a time, and college kids' careers come quickly, but I’m proud that he’s graduating because that's a huge accomplishment. He's been a captain, and now a starter. He has a lot of basketball ahead of him, I think he's gonna play basketball for a long time so I'm happy about that."

I will never forget the amount of hard work that went into every practice and game, the tough times that we’ve been through together as a team, but most importantly, the team and its sense of community. Especially those days of getting over the humps, no one felt like going to practice, but we all came together and worked to improve. "

Akwasi Yeboah was originally recruited by Steve Pikiell when he was the head coach at Stony Brook University, and played three seasons there, making 72 starts over 95 games, before using his final season of eligibility as a graduate transfer to come to Rutgers. This season, he has made an immediate impact for the Scarlet Knights, starting in 20 of 29 games, and averaging 9.8 points and 4.7 rebounds, both of which rank third on the team. He is shooting 43.2 percent from the field and leads the team in three-point percentage (36.4%) and free throw percentage (78.1%). He has also collected 26 assists, 23 steals and 14 blocks. The Chigwell, England native is majoring in Health Administration in Rutgers' Graduate School.

Akwasi came in this year and gave a really young basketball team some serious maturity. He’s all you could ask for really. He’s a great student with the highest grade point average on the team in graduate school. He comes to practice every day. You can count on him. You don't have the ups and downs that you have with younger players. He's willing to take big shots. He’s been great. It was too short of a time with him, I just wish I had him here sooner."

It’s crazy. It’s surreal. It’s been an incredible journey. It’s not over yet, there’s still much more to accomplish with this team, and individually, but it’s been a quick senior year. It felt like I just got here this summer. It’s been really fast and a great journey. I have no regrets, and I think I made the best decision coming here."

Joey Downes

Joey Downes is the lone member of the three senior student-athlete honorees to have spent all four years 'On The Banks". A walk-on who was put on scholarship last season in recognition of his contributions to the program, he has seen action in 17 games as a Scarlet Knight. That included a memorable moment this season against Caldwell, when his stepped in and drilled two consecutive three-pointers. An excellent student, the English major is a two-time Big Ten All-Academic honoree. The East Sandwich, Mass. native has served as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and traveled to Honduras and Puerto Rico in the summers of 2017 and 2018, respectively, to benefit Soles4Souls, a global not-for-profit dedicated to fighting poverty.

Joey’s been here since day one, so Joey has given blood to the program in so many ways. He's into film, so someday you're going to be watching him on the big screen. He's got success written all over him. He’s a great kid, coachable, a teacher, and great in the locker room. Everyone loves Joey. He’s involved in everything on campus, and I think that’s what makes our team kind of special and unique because they're very involved with a lot of other activities thanks to Joey. He gets our team involved in a lot of school activities. Joey's got that vantage point of where this program has been. I love his perspective on the growth of the program. I'm going to miss him a great deal."

I came here not knowing a single person. I knew Coach Young, but that was about it. But, I just decided that I was going to go for this and take the risk and see what happens. It paid off in numerous, countless ways. Having this opportunity as a walk on allows me to be a part of this team and help in any way that I can. You have to love basketball, you have to love your teammates and you have to love seeing other people succeed, wanting the best for the team. I just came in every day and tried to get the team better. That's the only thing I was focused on. And it was worth it."

Rutgers two student managers set to be recognized are two of the most hard working and dedicated members of the program. The pair are New Jersey natives, with Scherer a native of Manalapan and Sasso hailing from Randolph. The two have spent their collegiate careers working for the program behind the scenes, setting up practices, coordinating logistics on team road trips, and accomplishing of other necessary task.

Is there a managers Hall of Fame? Hall of Fame guys, both of them. These two guys have just been awesome. First of all, they're real talented and bright. They’re going to be successful in whatever they do. They go about things quietly and get stuff done. As big of losses as we can have, they're always around and they're dedicated like no one else. They've been pillars for us since we got here. They will be missed, and I’ll be crying when those two graduate from our program."
