Montez Mathis provides a steadying presence at the shooting guard spot for the Scarlet Knights. With a hard-nose style and fierce work ethic, the Baltimore product brings a tough and tenacious attitude to the RU lineup.

A high profile recruit after playing in the Baltimore Catholic league, Mathis came to The Banks and made an immediate impact. Mathis has started 54 games over his first two years at Rutgers, including being only one of two Scarlet Knights to start all 31 games this past season.

Mathis averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds with 30 steals. His defense was a hallmark, hounding opposing ball handlers with a 2.6% steal rate.

With his quickness, Mathis was a presence in the transition came, turning steals into highlight-reel slam dunks in a flash. An unselfish player, Mathis bought in to the team's mentality and has been a key cog in the Scarlet Knights' resurgence.

He’s an elite defender. Our league has some of the best guards in the country and he accepts that
challenge. He wants that assignment and that’s the first part of being an elite defender.
