Wrestlers Finish Action at Battle on the Banks
Jan 03 | Wrestling
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – With the 2021 season set to start in less than a week, several Rutgers wrestlers competed in the inaugural Battle on the Banks event on Saturday, hosted by the Scarlet Knights Wrestling Club (SKWC). Sebastian Rivera earned a tech fall over three-time NCAA qualifier Shelton Mack, while Billy Janzer, Robert Kanniard and Michael VanBrill picked up wins in the exhibition card.
Ranked No. 10 by FloWrestling and No. 15 in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll, Rutgers begins its season Friday when it hosts No. 2 Michigan at the RAC on BTN (7 p.m.). The six-date, nine event calendar features four Big Ten Conference duals, one Big Ten Conference tri-meet and one Big Ten Conference quad.
Rutgers enters the 2021 season with plenty of hype. Ten Scarlet Knights are featured in preseason rankings, as RU looks qualify five or more wrestlers for the NCAA Championships for the seventh consecutive season under head coach Scott Goodale. Rutgers returns four student-athletes – No. 14/NR Janzer, VanBrill, No. 20/20 Nicolas Aguilar and No. NR/6 Sammy Alvarez – who qualified for nationals last season, as well as 2020 Big Ten Champion and No.1/4 Rivera, who transferred to Rutgers after a standout collegiate career at Northwestern. All rankings are FloWrestling/Intermat.
