The five things to know before the Scarlet Knights face the Jaguars at Jersey Mike's Arena
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's basketball (1-0) hosts South Alabama (1-0) on Friday evening, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. inside Jersey Mike's Arena and live on B1G+.
Rutgers will welcome back three of its alums from the WNBA: 2019 All-Star Game MVP Erica Wheeler, 2020 Most Improved Player Betnijah Laney, and 2021 WNBA Champion and Finals MVP Kahleah Copper. The trio will participate in a live Q&A on court as part of halftime entertainment.
Osh Brown, a graduate transfer from Ball State, starts the season as the NCAA Division I active career leader in rebounds with 1,117 and in double-doubles with 49. Brown ranked second in the nation last season with 9.5 defensive rebounds per game, and seventh with 16 double-doubles. She made her Rutgers debut with a game-high 11 rebounds in the Saint Peter's win, her 60th career double-digit boards game.
The Scarlet Knights are one of just five teams in NCAA Division I to boast three current 1,000-point scorers on the 2021-22 roster: Osh Brown (1,493), Lasha Petree (1,398), and Victoria Morris (1,379) combining for 4,263 points. Jailyn Mason has 961 career points and Shug Dickson has 913. They would become the fourth and fifth, making Rutgers the only school in the country to roster four or more 1,000 career point scorers.
When RU takes the court at the newly named Jersey Mike's Arena, the program will carry a 229-51 record on its home court since the 2002-03 season. The Scarlet Knights are 50-8 at Jersey Mike's Arena over the past four-plus seasons.
Rutgers won all four of its regular season non-conference games last season and have won 11 consecutive regular season non-conference contests since the 2019-20 season. Rutgers has won its last 10 regular season dating back to last winter after winning nine straight in the Big Ten last season, the program's longest winning streak since joining the conference. The Scarlet Knights had their first nine-game conference winning streak since the perfect 16-0 Big East season of 2005-06, which was an actual 24-game Big East streak going back to '04-05.
