Tennis Earns Doubles Point against No. 15 Michigan
Mar 13 | Women's Tennis
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis secured the doubles point in a 6-1 loss to Michigan on Saturday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
The Scarlet Knights earned wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to claim their second consecutive doubles point in Big Ten Conference play, as the team also earned the point on March 7 at Minnesota. Freshman Daira Cardenas and redshirt senior Jaci Cochrane muscled a 6-4 win over Michigan's Gala Mesochoritou and Alyvia Jones in the No. 3 position, while freshman Alisa Prinyarux and junior Tess Fisher followed with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 position to clinch the point.
"This was by far our best doubles performance," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We played real clean on all three courts. Our strong doubles play translated into singles in the beginning, but Michigan is a very good team. We're going to keep focusing on ourselves and get prepared for Michigan State tomorrow."
The Wolverines won all six singles matches, but not without a strong effort from RU. Fisher was up 5-0 in her first set against Chiara Lommer in the No. 2 position before she dropped her first set, 7-5. Fisher also held a late lead in her second set before Lommer secured the 6-4 win in set two. Senior Maya Jacobs played strong in the No. 1 position, as she tied late in her second set before she lost, 7-5, to Kari Miller.
