Men’s Soccer Drops Road Match at Penn State

Barry & Borden scores not enough in setback

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rutgers men's soccer (3-3-0) fell in a 4-2 shootout at Penn State (3-1-0) in a Big Ten match on Monday afternoon at Jeffrey Field. The teams combined for 32 shots.

The Nittany Lions led by a two-goal margin at three different times, with RU's senior forward Ritchie Barry and senior defender Vincent Borden each cutting the Scarlet Knights' deficit to one with goals in the contest. Junior midfielder Nick Cruz assisted Barry's marker in the 34th minute, and Borden's was an unassisted blast in the 54th.

"We showed a lot of heart today coming back a few times and scoring, but we just did not play well enough as a team to win," said head coach Jim McElderry. "A few good performances, but we need everyone playing well to compete with the top teams in the nation. We will get back at it tomorrow for our Indiana match on Friday."

Penn State bunched a pair of tallies together for the 2-0 lead in the 25th and 28th minutes off a fast break and a direct shot off a set piece. Barry cut that lead in half in the 34th. Cruz stepped up to a corner kick and bent a service into the mixer, where Barry was towering over the defense for the header off the side of his skull into the back of the net.

The Nittany Lions regained the two-goal advantage just 2:30 into the second half, but Rutgers again fought back. In the 54th minute, Nick Cruz sent another dangerous corner into the Penn State 18, after a blocked shot by Cole Sotack, the ball ended up on the left side at the feet of Borden, who faked, cut to his right, and slotted home his first of the season to the right side, again cutting the deficit to one.

The Penn State pressure did not relent, and the home team went ahead 4-2 with Daniel Bloyou's second tally of the match in the 77th minute.

The Nittany Lions held a 20-12 advantage on shots, and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Rutgers' Oren Asher made five saves, and sophomore defender Hugo Le Guennec was credited with his second team save off the goal line in as many games.

The Scarlet Knights return home to host No. 23 Indiana on Friday, March 19 at 1 p.m. at Yurcak Field, streaming on Big Ten Network+.
