Guirantes Named Region 4 Finalist for WBCA All-America
Mar 24 | Women's Basketball
Guirantes is now a two-time WBCA Regional All-American, the first repeat honoree since Cappie Pondexter earned four consecutive nods from 2003-06. Guirantes will now seek to become the program's first WBCA All-American since Pondexter's First Team distinction in 2006.
The Bellport, New York native played her final collegiate game in the NCAA Tournament, producing the fourth highest individual scoring total in the national tournament's first round with 30 points.
During her final season "On the Banks," Guirantes claimed an ESPN National Player of the Week honor, two Big Ten Player of the Week accolades and two Big Ten Honor Roll nods, while becoming just the third player in Rutgers history to record a triple-double in a game. She ranks 17th in the nation in scoring (21.6 points per game) with a quartet of 30-plus-point performances. Guirantes is the only player in the Big Ten to rank in the Top 5 in each of the points, assists, steals and blocks per game categories.
There have only been two individual seasons in Rutgers history when a player averaged at least 20 points, six rebounds, and three assists, and both belong to Guirantes. She again stuffed the stat sheet this season, averaging 6.0 rpg, 5.2 apg, 2.2 spg and 1.8 bpg in 2020-21. She leaves the college game with 1,696 career points, which is the ninth most of any player to wear the Scarlet Knight uniform.
Guirantes did consistent damage against some of the nation's top teams. She averaged 24.1 points per game in seven contests against teams ranked in the NET Top 50.
The WBCA All-America selection committee uses an equation to determine an equitable number of finalists from each region. The number of NCAA Division I institutions in each region is divided by the number of NCAA Division I institutions overall to determine a percentage for each region. This percentage is then multiplied by 52 (the total number of desired finalists) to get the number of finalists for each region.
