No. 19 Women’s Soccer Draws with Nebraska on the Road
Mar 25 | Women's Soccer
LINCOLN, NEB. – No. 19 Rutgers women's soccer (6-1-2, 6-1-2 Big Ten) and Nebraska (1-4-3, 1-4-3 Big Ten) played to a 0-0, double overtime draw on Thursday afternoon in Lincoln. The Scarlet Knights led in shots (22-10), shots on goal (10-4), and corner kicks (9-0), but the Cornhuskers outlasted the offensive dominance.
Junior goalkeeper Meagan McClelland registered four saves to secure Rutgers' fourth shutout of the season, as the Scarlet Knights have held all nine Big Ten opponents to single-digit shots on goal this year.
"Today's game was a huge, physical battle. The defense stayed solid through 110 minutes and the offense was knocking on the door the whole game," said McClelland. "While the ball just couldn't find the back of the net for us, there were definitely positives on both sides of the ball and now it's time to focus on Sunday's game."
Rutgers took control early with an offensive advantage throughout the first half, leading Nebraska 9-4 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks. The two best Scarlet Knight attempts on target were saved by the Cornhuskers' goalkeeper.
McClelland collected two saves of her own in the opening stanza to keep it a 0-0 tie going into halftime.
The Scarlet Knights maintained a strong attack through the second half, leading shots 10-4 and corners 5-0. Nebraska, however, held off the Scarlet Knights with five saves in the frame to push the match to overtime.
Across the two overtime periods, Rutgers maintained its offensive advantage, leading shots 10-2. Nebraska's keeper came up with three saves in the final minutes to hold off the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers remains on the road with a trip to Wisconsin on Sunday, March 28. Match time is set for 12:30 p.m. ET and will be televised live on Big Ten Network.
