No. 19 Women's Soccer Edged by Wisconsin, 1-0, on the Road
Mar 28 | Women's Soccer
MADISON, WISC. – Despite No. 19 Rutgers women's soccer (6-2-2, 6-2-2 Big Ten) leading in offensive opportunities, Wisconsin (6-3-1, 6-3-1 Big Ten) edged out a 1-0 victory on a windy Sunday afternoon in Madison.
The Scarlet Knights held a 13-4 advantage on shots, including a lead of 7-1 in shots on goal. However, the Badgers' goalkeeper recorded six saves in the game to hold off RU.
"From the start we knew the wind was going to have a factor on us, the first half I thought we did a good job of managing that since we were going against the wind," said junior Shea Holland. "We came out for the second half with confidence going forward, keeping possession, and that showed with our chances on net. We aren't leaving this game with their head down as far as our efforts, it just didn't go our way this time. We are going to learn from it and just keep moving forward."
Rutgers and Wisconsin traded shots in the opening half, as the Badgers held a slight edge in shots, 3-2. Although the Scarlet Knights had the lone shot on goal in the frame, the score remained knotted at 0-0 entering halftime.
Returning from the break, RU maintained its lead in offensive chances. The Scarlet Knights recorded 11 shots throughout the stanza, but the six shots on target were saved by the Badgers' keeper to keep the match scoreless.
In the 87th minute, UW snuck in a goal to take a 1-0 edge in the game. Rutgers quickly countered, earning back-to-back corner kicks in the 88th minute. However, a final shot by senior Gabby Provenzano in the waning seconds would be saved by UW's keeper to close out the contest.
Rutgers travels to Michigan for its final regular season contest on Saturday, April 3.
