Varsity 8 races in the championships’ main event and places fifth in the country
SARASOTA, Fla. – No. 7 Rutgers rowing earned a seventh-place national finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships at Nathan Benderson Park following the finals on Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights compiled 96 team points to place seventh in the country at the national championship event. The Varsity 8 competed in the grand final of its boat class and finished fifth in the nation. The Varsity 4 won their petite final on Sunday for a seventh-place national finish, while the Second Varsity 8 placed 10th in the NCAA with their fourth place showing in the petite final.
Making their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships under fourth-year head coach head coach Justin Price after snapping an 18-year drought, Rutgers improved on its 11th place national finish from 2019.
"This was a fantastic weekend and another significant step forward for our program," Price said. "Our team showed tremendous determination and made a statement with our performance all season long. I am incredibly proud of our entire team for everything that has been accomplished and am looking forward to continuing to build momentum."
The Varsity 8 bolstered the Scarlet Knights' finish at the national event with the program's first appearance in a grand final. Rowing alongside the top teams in the nation, Rutgers' seventh-ranked crew placed fifth in the NCAA with a time of 6:27.635 fighting against a headwind and after a lengthy lightning delay. The performance earned 54 championship points for Rutgers.
The Second Varsity 8 hung with the field in a thrilling opening 1000 meters where the top four boats were separated by less than a second. It remained close throughout with the B final's winner, No. 19 Brown, finishing 3.68 seconds ahead of fourth-place Rutgers, who claimed 10th place national honors and 26 championship points.
The Varsity 4 took the lead in their petite final during the second 500 meters, pulled away in the third, and maintained their lead for the victory despite a late charge from No. 16 Washington State, No. 10 Duke, and No. 8 California, who all finished within 3.5 seconds of the Scarlet Knights. The result pulled in 16 points for the Scarlet Knights' team standings.
