Johnson recognized by CoSIDA for his academic achievements
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers men's basketball student-athlete Myles Johnson was named Academic All-District on Thursday by CoSIDA. The Scarlet Knights center earned the accolade which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). First-team Academic All-District honorees (such as Johnson) will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable) Academic All-America honorees will be announced in late May.
Johnson, who also earned the Paul Robeson Renaissance Award this week in the annual Rutgers' Chancellor's Awards, is a two-time Big Ten All-Academic honoree. One of five selections in District 2, which encompasses six states along with Washington DC, he held a 3.50 GPA while majoring in Computer and Electrical Engineering. Johnson Established BLKdev, an initiative to inspire minority youths to participate in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives. The Long Beach, Calif. native was named to the NABC Honors Court and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
On the court, Johnson was named All-Big Ten and All-Met after leading the Scarlet Knights in rebounding (8.5 rebounds per game) as Rutgers made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991. He scored 8.0 points per game and shot 62.8 percent from the field. He was second in the Big Ten in blocks (2.4) and sixth in the league in rebounds (8.5), along with seven double-doubles.
